Syensqo Oldbury site wins Building of the Year Award

Syensqo’s Oldbury site has been awarded the Building of the Year prize at the UK National Sustainability Awards for its innovative approach to transforming industrial areas into green spaces. The project, which also earned a shortlist position in the Biodiversity Protection category, focuses on creating natural habitats while promoting sustainability and biodiversity. Judges highlighted the extensive involvement of employee volunteers and the initiative's community-driven nature as key factors in its success.

The site’s work is part of Syensqo’s broader ‘One Planet’ programme, which aims to meet the COP15 "30 by 30" target by converting 30% of its land into green spaces by 2030. The initiative demonstrates how legacy industrial areas can be rehabilitated into sustainable environments, providing ecological benefits while serving as a model for similar efforts across the sector.

“This recognition is a proud moment for the entire team and shows that a site with 170 years of industrial history can not only meet but surpass sustainability goals," said Ian Fryer, Syensqo Oldbury Site Manager. "The revitalized site is already attracting wildlife like wagtails, goldfinches, bees and butterflies, marking a significant step in our ongoing journey toward a greener future. And we’re just getting started. Our plans to create a nature corridor and earn accreditation from the Wildlife Habitat Council will move us closer to Syensqo’s vision of advancing humanity through sustainable innovation right here in Oldbury.”
