Mammoet Replacing Bridges at Amsterdam Centraal

Mammoet has begun work on replacing five railway bridges at Amsterdam Centraal Station as part of the High-Frequency Rail Transport (PHS) Programme. Four steel bridges and one concrete bridge on the station’s east side will be upgraded over five years to support increased train and passenger capacity. The project, carried out in partnership with Dutch engineering company Dura Vermeer, aims to minimize disruption by conducting most of the work over water.

Each bridge consists of three sections, measuring between 24 and 28 meters in length and weighing up to 275 tonnes. Mammoet is responsible for loading, transporting, and installing the components, which are fabricated by Hollandia. The structures are being transported on flattop barges through the river De Lek and the Lekkanaal before reaching the station. A combination of pontoons, a mobile crane, and Mammoet’s Self-Propelled Modular Transporters (SPMTs) will position the sections, with final installation taking place from the deck of a barge.

“As a reliable partner, we have been involved in this project since 2021. We came up with the approach to install the bridges on water to limit transport movements and disruption in the city center. This makes it a complex operation because space is limited and there are many steps that must be carefully managed. Every change you make influences something else, and that is a major challenge for this project.” said Leo de Vette, Project Manager at Mammoet.
