Volvo Construction Equipment (Volvo CE) is helping drive sustainability on Stockholm's pioneering fossil-free construction site in the ‘Slakthusområdet’ redevelopment. Following a successful first phase, where the use of electric machines rose from 10% to 50%, the project has saved 2,759 tons of CO₂. The second phase sets more ambitious sustainability targets, aiming for a 100% fossil-fuel free site by using HVO100 fuel and expanding the electric machine fleet.
The initiative supports Stockholm City’s goal of becoming climate-positive by 2030, showcasing the potential of electric equipment in reducing emissions, noise, and air pollution in urban construction projects. The site currently uses three electric Volvo CE machines, including two EC230 Electric crawler excavators and one L120H Electric Conversion wheel loader. Charging infrastructure from Eviny also supports the ongoing operation.
“The first phase showed the effectiveness of electric machines in performing tasks while significantly reducing CO₂ emissions. This is invaluable for city center projects to help municipalities meet their emission reduction targets and enhance air quality, as well as reducing noise levels for everyone’s benefit.” said Fredrik Tjernström, Head of Electromobility Solutions Sales at Volvo CE.
