ABB EC Titanium Motors Win ENERGY STAR Award

The ABB Baldor-Reliance EC Titanium motor has received the 2024 ENERGY STAR Emerging Technology Award from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency. This award acknowledges products that meet advanced performance criteria and have the potential to significantly reduce greenhouse gas emissions. The recognition is part of the EPA's initiative to highlight innovative technologies in the commercial HVAC electric motors sector.

The EC Titanium motor combines synchronous reluctance and permanent magnet technologies with a rotor design that avoids rare earth elements. It is designed for efficiency and quiet operation and is compatible with variable speed drives. Suitable for applications such as fans, pumps, and HVAC systems, it is available as a standalone motor or an integrated drive unit.

Electric motors account for 45% of the world’s electricity use in buildings and industrial applications, with costs projected to reach $900 billion annually by 2030. This highlights a major opportunity for efficiency improvements. In response to a call for product nominations, the EPA has proposed recognizing motors meeting the IEC’s IE5 efficiency level, the highest current standard. IE5 motors offer not only significant energy savings but also benefits such as quieter operation, lower operating temperatures, and longer equipment life.
