More than 20 Liebherr tower cranes are operating on the Fehmarnbelt Tunnel, a major underwater project connecting Denmark and Germany. When completed, the 18-kilometer tunnel beneath the Baltic Sea will be the world's longest immersed tunnel. Many crane units feature rail-mounted configurations, providing flexibility across the Danish construction site, where they handle the production and transport of 79 standard tunnel elements, each measuring 217 meters in length and weighing approximately 73,000 tonnes.
The tunnel will include a two-track electrified railway and four motorway lanes, forming part of the Scandinavian-Mediterranean corridor within the European transport network. Rail-mounted cranes allow efficient movement across production areas without dismantling, while robust slewing systems maintain operation in challenging weather conditions.
The project is being executed by the Joint Venture Femern Link Contractors, with crane operations continuing across expansive assembly areas. Liebherr's integration into this complex infrastructure project highlights the equipment’s durability and performance under extreme operational demands, with rail mobility and powerful slewing technology meeting the site’s heavy-lifting, tight-schedule, and extended-operation requirements.
