Liebherr Tower Crane Assembles Landmark Viewing Tower in Harz

A Liebherr 340 EC-B 16 tower crane was used to lift steel components for a new 70-metre-high viewing tower in Rothesütte, Germany, described as the world’s largest witches’ broom. Supplied by Hüffermann, the crane had a hook height of 57.5 metres and a 40-metre radius, enabling it to lift 12.5-tonne steel sections into place. The site’s remote location and restricted access required precise planning, with over 2,500 steel components and 22,300 bolts assembled to form the 452-tonne structure.

Part of the ‘Harzer Hexenreich’ attraction, the tower will offer panoramic views of the Harz region and become a key feature of the ‘Harzer Hexenstieg’ hiking trail. The state of Thuringia has provided 10.1 million euros in funding, with project completion expected in 2025.

Liebherr says that the crane’s high lifting capacity and compact design were essential for overcoming the site’s logistical challenges. Its ability to operate efficiently in tight conditions ensured smooth progress, with dismantling completed at the end of 2024.
